The July holidays were full of excitement for our T2.3 Peer Educators and our Out of
School youth. They were enjoying a full week of leadership training from Johnson and
Wales University students.
Johnson and Wales University (JWU) is an American university situated in Rhode Island. It
was founded in 1914 and students represent 84 different countries, and all 50 states of the
US.
The camp took place at Rocklands Campsite from 6 to 9 July. On 10 July they enjoyed a trip
to Robben Island which was the highlight of their week. The camp was fully funded by the
University and organised by Roddy Bray. The programme, which consisted of an obstacle
course, wall-climbing, and various group discussions, was put together by Rocklands. The aim
of the camp was to motivate our Peer Educators to live life to the fullest regardless of the
many obstacles they have to face. The JWU students have truly inspired our Peer Educators
with their stories and encouragement.
It was amazing to see how the students bonded with our Peer Educators. When it was time
to say farewell there were a lot of tears. Many of our Peer Educators still keep contact with
them via facebook and are confident that their relationships will continue.
A big “Thank you” to Roddy Bray and the Rocklands staff for making the camp a success.
Managing 77 students is not an easy task. We also want to thank Johnson and Wales
University for making the camp possible through their funding.
This month’s Photo of the Month is a family group
shot by Stephan Theron.
I used a Canon 450D with standard 18-55mm
lens at F/6.3 and 1/100s. I used a strong 300W
builders light, bought at Mica, to back light each
face. I took five pictures, one of each person and
then, with the magic of computers, combined the five
pictures into one. It was taken at night in the garden
to get the black background.
