St James Peak provides superb views of Muizenberg, the False Bay Coast and the distant Hottentots Holland Mountains over the bay.
It can be accessed from several points to suit fitness and experience levels. From the Silvermine gate, which is the easiest, although longest walk or from Peck’s Valley or Baliey’s Kloof for hikers looking for a little more excursion.[in search of venturing further.]
For those walking in from the gate, a quick detour to the Silvermine Waterfall is well worthwhile at this time of year. Although we haven’t had nearly enough rain the large catchment area of Silvermine ensures the stream is running and short steep path down to (and up from) the waterfall allows walkers to explore the top and bottom of the falls.
Families and dogs can walk right up the jeep track or take a number of other paths to add a bit of variety to the hike. Silvermine is one of the few places novice hikers can [explore on their own] venture on their own without a guide, although it would be advisable to take along Peter Slingsby’s Silvermine map as a reference.
While it may be all right for novice people [beginners], if your dog is not used to being in the great outdoors, please ensure it is kept on a leash at all times. Dogs that have not left their yard for years can run off in excitement or fright at the drop of a leaf or rustle of a protea bush and be near impossible to catch.
If you climb up Peck’s Valley or Bailey’s Kloof, take some binoculars with you because you may be lucky enough to spot some whales in False Bay at this time of year. It is always a thrill to be hiking and whale watching at the same time. Where else in the world can anyone do that!
