Situated in the heart of Imhoff Farm Village in Kommetjie, between a variety of arts, crafts and delicacy shops – The Pickled Fish, a charming and intimate lunch-spot can be found. Its friendly atmosphere, rows of neat wooden tables and picturesque outside area invites you in to indulge in their wide selection of tasty fruits de la mer.
Settling in our chairs overlooking a quaint garden, our waiter handed us our menus, took our drink orders and left us to pour over the reasonably priced dishes and the even more affordable specials of the day. As we were visiting The Pickled Fish for lunch, it seemed appropriate to try the dish that gave the restaurant its name, the Homemade Malay Pickled Fish (R45.50).
Rather dubious about what to expect, as none of us had ever tried the dish before. The mental image of layers of fish preserved in vinegar and oil painted a rather unpleasant picture. Thus it was to our surprise (a rather pleasant one at that) when a large portion of hake smothered in delectable onions, a curry sauce and spices was served. No one was disappointed – on the contrary it was added to ‘the favourites’ on our culinary list.
The relaxing atmosphere, late afternoon sun, wine and good company paired with the arrival of our selection of mains created an ideal lunchtime.
Crispy calamari strips with a sweet chilli mayonnaise (R72.50) was accompanied by not only a side serving of fries, but also a fresh garden salad. The soft, non oily strips were favourable and the well-sized portion soothed the post-deadline hunger pangs. The Grilled Kingklip with lemon and herb olive (R120) was served with the same selection of accompaniments as the other dishes; fries and a garden salad. The fresh herbs on top of the white meat, added to its taste and succulent texture. Every bite was savoured. The last main to be enjoyed, was a ‘special of the day’ and a dish that had never been tried before. Traditionally known as a French dish; the West Coast Bouillabaisse (R95), or seafood stew, contained a few of the Cape’s favourite oceanic gems. The deep bowl combined a selection of prawns, mussels and Linefish covered in a thick, creamy tomato broth. A creative, yet practical touch was added to the presentation by the fish shaped breads that accompanied it. Relished by the recipient, a mental note was made that “next time” he would bring his wife along so she could also try it.
Still sipping on the remainder of our wine, we decided that no meal would be complete without the final sweet aftertaste of dessert. The Baked Cheesecake (R34.50) was ordered and a large slice of moist and creamy cake arrived right-away. It was served with a dollop of berry ice cream, and decorated with sliced strawberries. Satisfied, we ‘dug’ in, but unable to manage another bite, it was decided to save a treat for later. Happy, relaxed and content with a take away in hand, we waved goodbye to The Pickled Fish.
