It’s finally here! Warmer temperatures, sunny days and an increase in the general mood – all the more reason to head out and soak up the sun. Situated just off Kalk Bay’s Main Road is a restaurant that will make any Pirate of the Caribbean proud.
At first glance Cape to Cuba’s blue wall and massive portrait of Che Guevara captures the attention. Curiosity draws patrons to explore what resembles a rather impressive looking beach hut. Beyond the wall a selection of small wooden tables, chairs and a bar are nestled under a reed canopy, while the main restaurant and cocktail bar provide clients with an indoor imitation of Havana.
Combine rhythmic beats, authentic Cuban decor, add aroma of spicy Caribbean dishes, a clear view of Kalk Bay harbour and a bottle of 2007 Graham Beck Merlot – and voila! – you have a recipe to create the perfect afternoon. The wide variety of authentic Cuban menu options includes tapas, salads, soups, mains and desserts, leaving even the most decisive of individuals staring at the multiple mouth-watering options.
Finally after much debating, a decision was made and our patient waitress, Meghan served an Aves Fiesta Salad (R49). The scrumptious salad consisting of seasonal fruit, Cajun chicken strips and greens is a definite must try for those getting into shape for the beach. The spicy chicken paired with chunks of fresh orange, apple, pineapple and banana created an unusual yet pleasing taste. Light and served as a reasonable portion, the salad would even be a suitable alternative for a main.
We, however, felt that a three-course lunch was in order, and took a meaty approach in selecting our main course. The Polo a Gridulce (R92), a chicken breast smothered in cumin, mango and ginger sauce accompanied by butternut, spinach and mashed potato was served. Every bite of succulent chicken was given a pleasant tangy aftertaste by the sweet yet spicy flavour of the sauce. The Che Shank (R110), named after the Argentine Marxist revolutionary, proved to be extraordinary. A decadent mint liquor sauce created a full-flavoured portion of red meat. The mint flavour, paired with vegetables left only the refreshing aftertaste of the praise worthy lunch behind. After clearing the plate, the sighing recipient happily agreed to return again sometime... for seconds.
No three – course meal would be complete without the sweet indulgence of a dessert. So, after re-evaluating the menu and the enthusiastic recommendations of our waitress, we decided to try the three layered milk cake covered in a rich rum sauce, Bella Tres Leche (R30). Divine and satisfying, the rich rum sauce would have made even the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow proud.
But what would a trip to the Caribbean be without the colourful and exotic taste of one of Cape to Cuba’s signature cocktails. A balanced blend of rum, gin, blue Curacao and the added sweet twist of pineapple juice created the perfect opportunity to say Adiós to daytime and Aló to the evening.
